Ten-year-old Noboru begins researching his family’s history and turns to his reserved, sometimes cranky grandfather Hideo for answers. Their conversations reveal the challenges Hideo faced as a Japanese immigrant in Brazil and uncover the existence of an uncle Noboru never knew. Through the stories of his grandfather, Noboru gains a deeper understanding of identity, memory, family, and his Japanese-Brazilian heritage.
